Packing

You should be well under way with planning your trip and making necessary preparations for your departure.  In this section, we will focus on packing your bag.

As you travel more and more, you will come to realize that a one pound or half-kilogram difference in the weight of your bag makes a substantial difference in the degree of effort needed to carry it from place to place.  On a warm day, this can make the difference between arriving somewhere soaked in sweat or somewhat fresh.  For long distances, this can make the difference between being exhausted or having some energy left for exploration at one’s destination.  So, the key is to pack lightly, and to pack fewer things than one thinks they need.  Make that much fewer.

If you need something to wear outside of your daily routine, chances are that you are anticipating going to a special place or participating in a special activity.  In such circumstances, you should be able to rent any special equipment (ski boots, crash pads, special hats or visors, etc.) or you should be able to buy something locally.  Unfortunately, for RTW travel, fashion statements need to take a back seat to practical considerations - packing a bag is an almost strictly utilitarian exercise.

The following web pages on GoRoundTheWorld.com offer tips and suggestions for packing lightly yet comprehensively.
