Visas on The Go and Visa Extensions

For certain itineraries, you may not be able to arrange for all the visas you need before departing on your RTW journey.  For example, U.S. citizens may apply for a Vietnamese visa up to six months before their planned arrival in Viet Nam.  If the travel plan for a U.S. citizen has him arriving in Viet Nam nine months after his initial departure from the U.S.A., then he will have to obtain his Vietnamese visa at some point during his RTW travels.

Obtaining a “visa on the go” is easy enough to do.  No matter what nation you are in, just go to an embassy or consulate which represents the country for which you need a visa, and ask for instructions.  With few exceptions, any embassy or consulate for a given territory can issue a visa to any national.  The procedures for a visa to a given country can and do change from location to location, but the fact that you will be able to get your visa remains the same.

When you are ready to arrange for a visa “on the go”, be sure to make your inquiries at the first opportunity you can - processing may take a few days, and who wants to sit around in a city they are ready to move on from just because a visa is in process?

Visa Extensions

If you have been delayed in your travel plans or if you want to stay longer in a given country than your visa allows, you may usually apply for a visa extension.  Typically, you must have already arrived in the country concerned, you must have cleared customs, your existing visa must still be valid, and you must pay a fee in order to apply for an extension.  For details, search the internet, check with your government’s travel advisory service, or consult a local passport and visa expeditor for that territory.
